So, I have to have a pump and mound... what can I do about this?
If you have a pump it is important to have a pump that is built to last. Ask other septic installers for a materials list. You will be surprised by the products that are used in the typical septic system installation. Cast Iron housings are not made to last in the caustic environments of your septic tank. Most installers install pumps that are designed to fail... thus creating the repeat business. Quality's philosophy is build it right the first time.
If you are using a pump to deliver the effluent to your drainfield it is worth your investment to put a pumping system that is designed to last and designed to help your drainfield last. With controls that allow for your drainfield to be timed dosed you can eliminate surges of water going to your drainfield. Surges can kill the bugs in your drainfield by allowing the drainfield to lose oxygen...basically, drowning them. A good pumping package that is installed with proper pump sizing, surge arrestors on the pumps and controls, and with proper grounding can be twice what a typical lift station can cost. However, in three to five years it can pay for itself with less repair and maintenance calls. There are alternative systems that can be designed for your needs. The system below is a drip irrigation system by Geoflow. The use of alternative treatment systems can clean the wastewater so that it can be used in a drip irrigation system. This system also lowers the the fill amount and reduces the size of your mound system footprint by as much 75%.
